Holiday boutique show was a success!

Dec 2nd and 3rd 2011 proved to be an energetic, festive and successful event for the Village Artists.
 The members were encouraged to see so many folks from Homewood come out and stop by the gallery.  We especially loved seeing all the kids and a few of them are now taking art classes.  The tree lighting ceremony at the park down the street put everyone in a great mood.

The potters had a fantastic turn out of friends and relatives.  We especially appreciated a visit from the Mayor of Homewood!

Pottery, jewelry, hand-cut tree decorations, paintings, purses and stained glass were purchased by our patrons to give as holiday gifts. A few holiday cookies and snacks were consumed and many a jolly conversation was had by our art lovers.

The members would like to say a sincere Thank You to all those in attendance and for supporting the Village Artists!

Holiday Boutique at the Village Artists Gallery and Studio

The holiday boutique is just a few days away.  The members have spent the last week getting the gallery ready.  Pottery, paintings, purses, jewelry, vintage boxes, handmade decorated trees and stained glass are just a few of our items.  Stop by for a snack and check us out.

Class Schedule change

There is a change in the Village Artists Fall Class Schedule for children.
The first Saturday class will be September 24 instead of the 17th.

     Pat Moore is participating in the Park Forest Art Fair on the 17th.

We thought you might like to see a photo of some of our members in front of our new store front, 1957 Ridge Road location.  Our hand painted sign which has become our unofficial Village Artist's logo and appears on our website and pamphlets has finally been hung atop our building!
  This sign was displayed for years and hung outside of our house in Flossmoor on Berry Lane.  It became a little worse for wear, weather beaten and chippy.   The ladies refurbished it with a little sweat equity (sanding, scraping, and painting). Thanks ladies- it looks GREAT.

Welcome New Member -Fran Hollander

I would like to welcome a new member to the Village Artists.   Her name is Fran Hollander and she is a painter, I asked her for a short bio.

 I have been drawing and painting since I was a child in Brooklyn, N.Y. I studied life drawing for several years  in Phoenix, Arizona, and continue to draw from a live model as often as possible. Although I am somewhat self-taught, I have taken classes and workshops in watercolor painting, oil painting, and design. I love drawing and painting people and animals, and so have primarily focused on portraits of both in oil, and occasionally in watercolor. I do paint still life and landscapes, usually incorporating figures into the latter.

Members working on new art

Wednesdays are busy days at the studio, painters and potters use this day to work on art and share their latest information.  The Village Artists are a group of artists and a non-profit working art studio/ gallery.  We share the space and have comradeship with fellow artists.

Carol Downs, a potter, was working on an interesting piece today.   A custom order incense burner, one cannot wait to see the final product!

Here Carol displays one of her beautiful bowls.  This glaze has flecks of green and gold. Lovely.

Joyce Riley is always working on a new project.  Look for Joyce at local Farmers Markets this summer.

The Mayor Came to the Grand Opening!

We had a great turn out for our Grand Opening event and the Mayor of Homewood came to support us!

Kiln and slumping glass

I have graciously been given a free kiln!  I answered an ad on Craigslist and it was made available to me from the Beverly Art Center.  It is a Skutt model 181 dating from 1965 to 1979.  It currently does not work- but I am hopeful.  My goal would be to have my own kiln and wheel and be able to do more work at home.  I am interested in slumping glass besides throwing pots.

Slumping glass involves heating Dichroic glass to a temperature of 1000 to 1400 degrees F , then you must follow four steps: heating the glass, soaking the glass, cooling the glass and annealing the glass.  All of these steps can be accomplished in the same kiln that heats ceramics.  These steps are followed to allow the glass to become smooth and melt and finally cool to room temperature to avoid cracking. The "slump" comes when the heated glass slumps into a smooth ceramic bisque mold.

I personally have never tried to work with glass but I look forward to trying it.  Our lead potter and president, Joyce Riley, has fused glass to the bottom surfaces of her pottery bowls.  The look achieved was one of water and reflection, a beautiful effect and she told me that all these pieces sold!!  Great job Joyce.

Carol Downs

Carol Downs is one of our potters and we would like to take this moment to feature her today.
Carol is one of our favorite makers of beautiful ceramic mugs.  These hand-thrown mugs are large and fit comfortably in your hand with a big sturdy handle- Carol's signature handles.  She chooses fantastic glazes.

In this photo Carol is standing in front of her table at one of our art shows. You can see the mugs on said table. She makes other works of art but mugs are her specialty.

Pat Moore

Pat Moore is one of our teachers of classes for children at the Village Artists. We would like to promote her future art exhibit and opening.

February Event:

On Saturday, February 5th from 6-9 p.m. join Fresh Starts at Union Street Gallery for a very special evening of art, wine and live music featuring the artwork of Patricia Moore who has been in charge of all the artwork at Fresh Starts for the past 8 years.!  We want to honor her by hosting an exclusive wine tasting which my husband Dale and I will be host and be pouring all the wines. 

Our gift to you is to dine with us that day or evening and receive a complimentary pass to the gallery AND the wine tasting that evening.  Even if you just have a bite to eat at Fresh Starts that day, I'll give you a free pass.  Otherwise there is a nominal $5.00 donation for the wine tasting that will be donated to Pat Moore and Union Street Gallery.

We will also be selling glasses of wine if you like what you taste.  Pat Moore is truly a remarkable woman and has been a true pioneer on the art scene in the South Suburbs for more than 30 years!  Pat is exhibiting over 30 large scale abstract expressionist paintings in a unique exhibition titled "Dialogue".  She will be coupled with works of 14 regional Sculptors, along with music by cellist Erica Lessie.

New art work by member Joyce Riley

I would like to take this moment and introduce myself.  I am Barbara Heine, one of the members of the Village Artists.  I have been asked to be a guest blogger for the group.  Here I am in a photo with my daughter, Becky.

I would like to use my time to talk about some new work by one of our members.

Joyce Riley is a potter and her business name is Ceramic JAR.  Joyce is what we like to call our "lead potter" because other Village Artists members look to her for guidance.  Joyce mixing the glazes for the potters and we look to her for leadership as we fire the kiln.  The potters and all the members appreciate her input.

Joyce has been trying some new techniques by fusing glass to the inside of her pottery. It makes for a lovely effect. She makes wonderful bowls, platters and small vessels for oil.

Lovely Silk Scarves from our President, Kathy Klein

We are continuing to feature our artists: 
Our group president, Kathy Klein, makes lovely hand painted silk scarves.

Construction on the remodel is moving along and we hope to have our Grand Opening in the new location very soon.  We will post announcements here when the date is set.

Holiday Boutique Show

On December 3rd  and 4th, 2010 the Village Artists hosted their annual Holiday Boutique at their new location on Ridge Rd, Homewood, IL.  The event was a huge success thanks to the work of several members, especially Sharon Lorsch and Kathy Klein.
